“The mission of the U. S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program is to collect new, unwrapped toys during October, November and December each year, and distribute those toys as Christmas gifts to less fortunate children in the community in which the campaign is conducted.”- U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program

“The idea originated with Diane Hendricks, wife of Marine Major William Hendricks. In 1947, she handcrafted a doll and asked her husband to deliver it to an organization so it could be delivered to a needy child at Christmas.”-Beth Crumley, Huffington Post

“When you donate money to the Toys for Tots program, 97% of the funds go directly to the kids. The other 3% is utilized for yearly fundraising and toy-raising.  No monies collected are ever used for salaries or personal use in the organization.”- Christi, USMC Life

1948 – The United States Marine Corps adopts Toys for Tots, and expands it into a nationwide community action project as the U. S. Marine Corps Reserves Toys for Tots Program.  Marines at each Reserve Center throughout the nation conduct toy collection and distribution campaigns in the communities surrounding the center.

Walt Disney designs the now famous Toys for Tots train logo and creates the first national Toysfor Tots poster.  These Christmas posters have become a recognized part of the annual program, and through the years have featured such notable characters as Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Dennis the Menace, Bugs Bunny and the Road Runner.  Posters have been designed by a member of the Association of Handicapped Artists, by Marine Corps Reserve artists as well as an array of well known artists such as Ted Drake and Bob Timberlake.” –Toys for Tots

“Today Toys for Tots hosts campaigns in 760 locations across the country. What started out as a small toy drive now impacts millions of lives from Los Angeles to New York. But here’s the thing. This toy drive isn’t about the military. It’s about the community, YOUR community.  It’s estimated that approximately 14.7 million children (one in five) are living in poverty today.”- Christi, USMC Life
